Water Music

By Marjorie Ryerson'65
University of Michigan Press
Ann Arbor, Mich., 2003

Marjorie Ryerson, a photographer, journalist, and professor of communication at Castleton State College (Randolph, Vt.), has created a book that celebrates the power and mystery of water through images, words, and music.

Accompanied by the poetic and lyrical contributions of 66 renowned musicians (Paul Winter, Eugenia Zukerman, and Dave Brubeck are among them) Ryerson’s color photographs chronicle the connections between water and spirituality and celebrate the beauty and vulnerability of water.

Called “a photography book with a social conscience,” Water Music affirms the intimate connection of water to the rhythms of life.

Net proceeds from the sale of Water Music will benefit the Water Music Fund of the United Nations Foundation, to be used in support of water preservation and to provide unpolluted drinking water to families around the world.

By Pam Withers’78
Walrus Books
North Vancouver,
British Columbia, 2003

Raging River, a book for ages 10-16, explores the world of whitewater rafting through the eyes of 15-year-old Jake Evans in this fictional tale by writer, editor, and avid kayaker Pam Withers.

Written with a keen understanding of kayaking technique, the story unfolds as Jake attempts to prove his worth as a river guide when he is chosen to take part in a whitewater rafting trip. When a series of disasters leaves his group stranded in the wilds of Canada, Jake and his rival must confront the threatening rapids of the Cattibone River. The pair learn to overcome adversity by working together as they search for help to save the group.

First in the “Take it to the Extreme” series, Raging River is an energetic adventure story based in the Canadian wilderness.
