After 15 Years, Track Meets Return to Home GroundPosted by admin on 7/12/12 • Categorized as Summer 2012
For the first time since the 1990s, the Beloit College track and field team hosted a home meet in April, when the Beloit Open kicked off at Strong Stadium’s Karris Track.
The event featured the Buccaneers, Carroll University, Knox College, and Rockford College, and marked the first home meet since April 19, 1997, when Beloit hosted the Herb Hodges Invitational.
After that 1997 meet, and in the ensuing 15 years, the track surface was deemed unsafe for competition, denying a large number of student-athletes the chance to compete on familiar home ground. But a campaign that raised $3.7 million in gifts spurred the redevelopment of the track, as well as the installation of a new turf playing field, and the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.
Last April’s meet, in which Beloit’s men and women both posted team wins, was a tune-up for the return of the legendary Beloit Relays, which will take place at Karris Field April 26-27, 2013.
